By the Way . . .
Retired Congressman Mervyn Dymally Appointed Community College Liaison.
Former California State Lt. Governor and retired United States Congressman
Mervyn M. Dymally has been appointed by Assembly Speaker Robert Hertzberg
(D-Van Nuys) as his liaison to the California community colleges. Assembly
Speaker Hertzberg was a big supporter of the community colleges during last
year's budget debates. The appointment of Mr. Dymally is viewed as an continuing
interest on the part of Hertzberg to gather more information and support
for the colleges during the 2001-02 legislative session.
Dymally will be visiting local college campuses to gain a better insight into the system's needs and how the Speaker came to be of help. He has already visited several colleges and is planning to introduce himself to the Board of Governors at the November 14, 2000 meeting. The Speaker's appointment of a community college liaison is unprecedented; the system hopes that Speaker Hertzberg's support translates into greater support from the Legislature and Governor Davis.
