By the Way ...

Part-Time Faculty Hired for Full-Time Jobs. With the recent release of the Chancellor's Office Fall 1998 "Report on Staffing and Salaries," and with the preliminary data from a survey on Fall 1999 hiring conducted by the Chief Human Resources Officers, the data is pointing out that better than 70 percent of the part-time faculty currently employed by community colleges are being hired for full-time faculty positions.

The survey conducted by the Chief Human Resource Officers regarding Fall 1999 hiring has produced preliminary data from 24 - about one-third - of the system's districts. These districts employ about a quarter of the colleges' full-time faculty (4,645 of 19,168). The 24 districts hired a total of 362 new faculty for a total of 403 positions that were advertised. Of the 362 hires, 138 (38 percent) were previously teaching part-time in the district where they were hired full-time. In addition 123 (34 percent) were teaching part-time in another California Community College. Thus, over 70 percent of the faculty hired were from the ranks of part-time instructors.

Progress is being made, but obviously not fast enough for some.
