President Signs Bill to Help Rural Schools. President Clinton has
signed into law H.R. 2389 and S 1608-the Secure Rural Schools and Community
Self-Determination Acts. This act will provide $1 billion over the next five
years to assist rural communities facing declining revenues from timber harvests
on federally owned land. California is slated to receive an estimated $36.2
million in federal support for distribution to local counties and communities.
A minimum of 80% of the funds must be used to maintain schools and roads,
with the remaining funds used for local county programs and resource restoration
projects.
