By The Way. . .

Joint Legislative Audit Committee to Hear Part-Time Faculty Issues. Assembly Member Scott Wildman (D-Los Angeles), chair of the Joint Legislative Audit Committee and author of AB 420 (part-time faculty study legislation enacted this past legislative session) will convene the audit committee for an informational hearing on issues pertaining to part-time community college faculty. Assembly Member Wildman has sent letters to selected community college representatives, organizations and union members to testify at a hearing scheduled for January 12, 2000 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the State Capitol, Room 447.

According to Assembly Member Wildman's letter, the hearing follows the success of last year's AB 420. However, there are numerous problems yet to be resolved. The hearing will focus on those topics identified in last year's hearings, with particular emphasis on seniority rights, compensation, office hours and health benefits. Wildman hopes that this hearing will result in a greater understanding of the issues surrounding part-time faculty, which will help the legislature in its deliberations later in the year.

Assembly Member Wildman has also invited members of the Assembly Higher Education Committee and Senate Education Committees to join in the discussion.

It is interesting that this hearing comes at this time - before CPEC has completed its study of part-time faculty issues as called for in AB 420. According to the legislation, CPEC is required to submit a preliminary report to the Legislature and Governor by March 2000.

Community college representatives desiring to participate in the hearing may contact Doug Lindsey in Assembly Member Wildman's office, (916) 319-2043.
