Republican Proposal to Remove Community Colleges from Proposition 98.
The Assembly Republican caucus may be considering a proposal that would remove
the community colleges from Proposition 98. The proposal is supposedly being
pushed by Assembly Member Robert Pacheco (R-Walnut) for inclusion in the
Assembly Republican 2000 Legislative Agenda. Assembly Member Pacheco recently
met with representatives from Mt. San Antonio Community College District
to explore the idea. Apparently he believes that removing community colleges
from the provisions of Proposition 98 would be a way for the colleges to
receive more funding. It has been reported that the Assembly Member feels
that the minimum guarantee prohibits legislators from providing additional
funds to the community colleges. The system appreciates his desire to give
community colleges more money, but this may not be the best way.
