California Higher Education System Larger Than Some States. If Californians public higher education system was a state; it would be the 40th largest state in the country. With more than 1.8 million students enrolled in UC, CSU and community colleges, California's higher education system would be just ahead of the State of Hawaii in population with 9 other states smaller in population than the number of students enrolled in California's public higher education institutions. Of course, the California community college system with approximately 1.4 million students enrolled ranks as the largest higher education system in the world.
According to an article printed in the C.A.S.H. Register newsletter, if California's K-12 public school system were a state; it would be the 17th largest state just behind the entire state of Missouri with 5,217,000 students. California's entire public education system, including higher education, would rank 13th if compared to the population of the 50 states in the union.
