Sacramento City College Takes on Early College High School

Sacramento City College, the University of California, Davis, and Washington Unified School District have come together to open a special high school in West Sacramento focused on helping students who have had difficulty succeeding in a traditional high school setting. West Sacramento Early College Preparatory School will open its doors in fall 2007 serving 60 six graders and 60 seventh graders. The school plans to add a grade per year up to the 12th grade.

The joint project is focused on preparing students for both school and the workforce. The new high school plans to help students challenged with issues of language acquisition, poverty, and basic skills remediation through the medium of preparation for a profession. Based on state content standards, the curriculum is infused with life lessons and real-world preparation for professional positions.

The school boasts a pipeline of committed staff, faculty, and administrators from the Washington Unified School District, Sacramento City College, and UC Davis. One of the more ambitious goals is to have students complete the A-G requirement by the time of their graduation and to have completed up to eight college units through concurrent enrollment.

The UC Davis School of Education is heavily involved in this project, along with support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Carnegie Foundation, and the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation.
