California Community Colleges Set up
New System for Transcripts
A new online system will reduce the costs and security risks for college transcripts. The system, known as CCCTran, was established by the California Community Colleges System Office.
The system will allow the community colleges, and the University of California and California State University systems to check transcripts almost immediately, without relying on the postal service or creating any potential corruption of transcripts within the records office. According to the System Office, staff costs of sending transcripts will be reduced by 93% from what they were with paper.
According to the Contra Costa Times, “A major hurdle remains persuading nearly 150 colleges and universities to use the system. Each of California’s 109 community colleges is governed by local administrators who would have to agree to pay $5,000 per year, and the 10-campus University of California has not committed to the project.”
The state has asked community college districts to test the new system and eight colleges are currently doing so. With the success of their online community college application program, state administrators are encouraging all community colleges to transfer to the new system within three years.
