By the Way . . .

Teacher Union Opposes Transportation Initiative.
The California Teachers Association (CTA) has come out in opposition to Proposition 42, the initiative which would require that state sales taxes on gasoline be dedicated to transportation projects. The measure is on the March 5, 2002 ballot.

A recent Field Poll indicated support from 51% after poll respondents were read a summary of the initiative. It was opposed by 20% with 20% undecided. The biggest opposition to Proposition 42 is CTA, which is concerned that it would take money from the state’s general fund and lower Proposition 98 funding.

The appearance of Proposition 42 on the march ballot was one of the reasons CTA did not support placing a statewide general obligation bond measure on the same ballot. They were concerned about how much money they will spend fighting Proposition 42 and at the same time generating enough revenue to support a bond measure.
