By the Way . . .
Term Limits Initiative Filed. On February 6, 2007, an initiative was filed to modify the state’s term limits law for members of the Legislature. The initiative would change the time limit of service from eight years in the Senate and six in the Assembly to a total of 12 years in one house. The proposed initiative could possibly extend the terms of Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez and Senate President pro Tem Don Perata, as well as other members.
The measure calls for a “transition period” to allow current Senators termed out in 2008 to remain in office an additional four years, even if they have already served for 12 years. This provision allows Senator Perata to run for reelection. Any term limits measure would have to go before voters on the presidential primary ballot in 2008.
