Where Will the Future Leaders of
California Community Colleges Come From?

The California community colleges are currently experiencing a severe turnover in their Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) and other leadership positions. A preliminary survey of the 72 districts indicates that, by the end of 2007, there could be as many as 49 new hires since 2006. Potentially, 2007 could see 26 current vacancies filled. With the number of pending vacancies that include Chancellors, Presidents/Superintendents, and Campus Presidents (multi-campus districts), one would question where these individuals would come from and how the system seem to develop almost overnight a disparity in leadership.

The openings can be divided into the following categories:

·                    In 2005-06, there were 23 new President/CEO appointments

·                    Currently, there are 18 CEO/President positions being filled on an Interim basis

·                    There are eight Chancellors/Presidents who have recently announced retirement from their districts
