By the Way . . .

Community College Initiative. Community college advocates have moved one step closer to qualifying the Community College Initiative for the 2008 ballot.

On January 16, 2007, the first set of signatures were submitted to the 58 county election offices across the state. They estimate that, by Friday, close to 900,000 signatures collected will be submitted. They believe that this will meet the qualifications to place the measure on the ballot for the June 2008 voters. The Secretary of State should verify if the measure qualifies for the June ballot by March, which requires 598,100 valid signatures.

The ballot measure would redefine the role of enrollment and formally alter the connection to the K-12 public schools Proposition 98 funding. It would allow a new community college portion of Proposition 98 to allow growth in community college enrollment.
