MiraCosta Board Says No to Audit
. MiraCosta College Trustees voted 4-3 against hiring an auditor to calculate the cost to the District of the investigation into a unauthorized sale of campus palm trees.

MiraCosta College Former Horticulture Department head Alleen Texeira plead guilty to a felony count of grand theft and two administrators also investigated were placed on leave.

Trustee Gloria Carranza brought the item forward, asking the board to have an open discussion on the matter when she estimated the cost to the district at $1 million. According to Carranza, “the public deserves a full accounting.” However, after a long and contentious debate, the Board was split in opposition to the audit.

According to the San Diego Tribune, James Austin, Vice President for Business and Administrative Services, told the board that Carranza’s calculation was accurate based on her criteria, which included legal and investigative fees, plus the salaries of administrators placed on leave and their replacements.
