By The Way. . .

Chancellor and Board of Governor President Meet With Governor. Chancellor Tom Nussbaum and Board of Governor's President, Alice Petrossian recently met with Governor Pete Wilson and Department of Finance Director, Craig Brown to discuss the 1997-98 community college budget. Chancellor Nussbaum reviewed the Board's budget proposals that have been adopted (see September 13, 1996 Update article "Budget Priorities" on page 176).

The Board is requesting more than $315 million in new revenue for the system to fund critical and essential needs. Nussbaum emphasized the proposals from the "critical" list of priorities which includes funding request for COLA, growth, equalization, instructional equipment, technology and library resources. Also, Nussbaum stressed the importance of honoring the Proposition 98 split agreement between K-12 and community colleges (89.65% for K-12 and 10.35% for community colleges). According to Nussbaum, during the course of the meeting neither the Governor or Craig Brown gave any hint as to how much money would be made available to community colleges in the 1997-98 proposed state budget. However, both the Chancellor and the Board President left the meeting with a positive feeling that the Governor will support most of the system's critical needs.
