Community College Advocacy in Washington D.C. The California Community
College Board of Governors (BOG) in collaboration with the Community College
League of California (CCLC) are trying to put together the necessary support
to reestablish a Washington D.C. based lobbying presence for California Community
Colleges. The BOG has committed to allocating $100,000 for this effort and
are calling upon local community college districts to contribute a matching
amount. According to Chancellor Tom Nussbaum, this will allow the BOG to
contract for a Washington D.C. presence as well as have staff in Sacramento.
Staff would be hired through CCLC, but housed in the Chancellor's Office
to make sure the information gets to districts and to ensure that the necessary
coordination and advocacy takes place in California. To make this effort
work, the BOG is prepared to enter into a "Memorandum of Understanding" that
will describe the collaborative effort, set forth the respect roles, and
describe how the funds will be applied. California has not had a strong presence
at the federal level for some time -- there are many important issues at
stake and California needs to have a very visible presence.
