Enrollment Growth Moving Slowly

Student enrollment growth is moving more slowly than originally forecast by the Chancellor's Office. In its annual survey of fall enrollments, the office estimated headcount enrollment for fall 1996 to be 1,381,700 &emdash; up about 45,000 (3.4%) from fall of 1995. This increase in enrollment is far less than expected &emdash; the Chancellor's Office was anticipating an increase in enrollments that exceed 5%. A concern is growing regarding the ability of the colleges to grow enough in the current year to be able to use all of the more than $60 million available in growth funds. If the Chancellor's Office fall enrollment numbers are accurate, spring 1997 enrollment would have to be up at least another 5% (70,000 students) to use all growth funding available.
