Special Education: Both Sides of the Equation

About the Workshop

General Fund contributions towards special education have been on the rise, recently nearing 60% of total expenditures, making effective resource management not only desirable but essential. State and federal revenues for special education do not provide adequate resources, so local educational agencies (LEAs) are required to make up the difference.

LEAs face a number of challenges in special education, including potential state funding deficits and the implementation of the Local Control and Accountability Plan services and actions. In addition to these changes, LEAs will need to keep an eye on what is happening at the state level along with legislative actions that could impact how special education funding is currently allocated.

With these important issues in mind, the focus of the workshop will
be on providing participants with tools and tips to help them support high?quality programs for students with disabilities that are legally defensible but that don’t break the bank.

Workshop Topics:

  • Special education funding sources
  • Management of the maintenance of effort requirement
  • Building a culture of collaboration
  • Management of the special education program and transportation costs
  • Challenges to funding and program compliance
  • Legal decisions impacting operations
  • Legislative update and hot topics
