HR Workshops: Basics and Beyond the Basics

For the first time, HR 101: the Basics of Human Resources Management and our new workshop, Beyond the Basics: Advanced Training for Human Resource Administrators, will be offered together on the same day. These two workshops provide an excellent opportunity to learn the basics of HR management as well as gain some additional expertise that will enable you to effectively manage your HR department. Participants may register for either workshop or both at a reduced rate.

HR 101: The Basics of Human Resources Management (AM Session)

About the Workshop

A well organized and highly effective human resources (HR) department will reduce legal expenses and safeguard the local educational agency's (LEA's) fiscal solvency. In this era of dwindling resources, and with as much as 90% of a district's General Fundrevenue being committed to compensating employees, LEAs can ill afford inefficiency in personnel management. This workshop focuses on essential HR operations and best practices in personnel management that, if implemented, will minimize legal risks and protect scarce financial resources.

Workshop Topics

  • Organizing the HR office for operational success
  • Recruiting, hiring, and retaining the best employees-and dealing with those who aren't
  • Negotiations and labor relations-a marriage without the possibility of divorce
  • HR best practices Understanding classified and certificated service and the rights of management and non-management employees
    • Classifying substitutes, short-term, and temporary employees appropriately
    • Managing certificated and classified layoffs and reemployment processes
    • Managing employee leaves

Beyond The Basics: Advanced Training for Human Resource Administrators (PM Session)

About the Workshop
While a well organized and highly effective HR department will reduce legal expenses and safeguard scarce fiscal resources, employment litigation is a huge and growing problem in California. The continued bleak economy and resulting layoffs are the leading causes of record breaking discrimination claims. LEAs are not immune to these employment trends and are facing increasing incidences of employee misconduct and mounting public pressure to dismiss marginal employees. Unexpected personnel expenses are predictable in the absence of sound personnel management practices. This advanced workshop offers an in depth examination of workplace investigations, the interactive process as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act, and employee misconduct. Attendees should have a good understanding of the basics of human resource management.

Workshop Topics
  • Developing an effective interactive process including sampleletters to employees, physician questionnaires, and medical release forms
  • Investigation basics
  • Making credibility determinations and knowing when to hire a workplace investigator
  • Documenting employee misconduct and preparing your discipline case
  • Knowing when to move for dismissal
