Advanced Collective Bargaining Workshop - Practical Solutions for 2012-13 and Beyond

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

There are no more prevalent and specific mandates on the operation of public schools than
those found in collective bargaining agreements. District management’s challenge is to create
positive employee contract settlements that are in alignment with the district’s financial capacity
and program goals. As fiscal resources become more volatile, limited, and student accomplishment
is even more visibly measured, these goals become even more urgent and difficult.

There are two levels of knowledge involved in the negotiations  process. First, the fundamental
aspects of preparing for negotiations, the legal aspects of the process, impasse procedures, etc.
Those important mechanical elements are covered in our “Fiscal Aspects of Negotiations”
workshop, which we offer online.

The second level involves practical applications, negotiating strategies, constructing and
presenting proposals and counter proposals, and dealing with “real-life problems for the
current contract. This “advanced” workshop addresses those issues and many more. If you are
going to be involved on the management side of the table this year, you need this workshop.

WORKSHOP TOPICS

We will address core issues surrounding the collective bargaining contract, as well as how to
negotiate in a strategic fashion to better position your district when a fiscal recovery comes,
in this half?day workshop. Topics to be covered include:

  • The current economic environment
  • How to negotiate current and out years in an uncertain economic climate
  • The outcome of the November election and collective bargaining implications
  • Developing your agencies bargaining strategy
  • Analysis of difficult fiscal conflicts in local educational agencies
  • Communicating to your stakeholders

The workshop will include a discussion of your negotiating challenges—difficult fiscal conflicts you
have faced that you want the presenters to analyze. All participants are welcome to email
negotiating scenarios that they would like discussed during the presentation. Maybe hearing it
another way might be just the answer to getting out of that difficult negotiating box.

This workshop is for the management side of the table only
