The Audit Challenge - Minimizing the Deficiencies, Maximizing the Benefits

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Confusion and uncertainty for the future is becoming the norm. As we have seen in past years, statutory regulations often drive the inclusion of programs in the Audit Regulations; this year is definitely no different. The loss of funding does not preclude programs from being added to or amended in the Regulations, particularly since much has changed with the most recent Budget. The number of audit findings included in the annual audit reports submitted to state agencies does not go unnoticed.

Despite the decrease in funding, districts still will need to contend with compliance guidelines for ongoing state and federal programs. The oversight by county offices (AB 2756,  Chapter 52/2004) will increase during our fiscal crisis and continue during the next couple of years, based on the fiscal pressures.

This workshop will include an update on Budget compliance requirements, mandates and mandate audits, the Audit Regulations, and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) statements, and will provide school agency business managers with the tools to manage their annual audit easily and successfully. We will include up-to-date information on all of the current changes for the 2009-10 fiscal year and the proposed changes for 2010-11. Audit preparation tips and potential compliance traps will be shared in areas that include:

  • New program requirements in 2009-10 and 2010-11
  • AB 1200 Oversight (AB 2756)
  • Audit Regulations
  • Charter Schools
  • GASB Statements
  • Reduction in School Days
  • American Recovery and Reinvestment Act
