The local educational agency (LEA) human resources (HR) office experiences a myriad of challenges, and it often feels like each new day brings a new complaint that requires our immediate attention. Employee complaints and personnel issues, both formal and informal, require immediate action by the employer. Under various statutory requirements (Title VII, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, the Occupational Safety and Health Act, and other local laws), LEAs are legally obligated to investigate complaints in a timely manner. In addition, although not all personnel matters rise to the level of a formal investigation, they involve close examination and a thorough response.

A well-organized and highly effective HR department is poised to respond to complaints and employee matters to avoid unexpected personnel expenses through implementation of sound policies and procedures related to workplace investigations. Employee complaints require immediate action by skilled supervisors, overseen by the HR administrator, to ensure a safe and healthy workplace, thereby reducing legal expenses and safeguarding the scarce resources of the LEA. This includes taking steps to stop any workplace conflict or alleged employee misconduct, protect involved parties, and begin investigations.

This webinar offers an in-depth examination of workplace investigations, tools and resources to effectively manage complaints, case studies, and tips for recognizing when legal counsel may be necessary. Additionally, the presenters will cover changes related to confidentiality rules and the investigator’s notes based on recent case law. Finally, webinar registrants will be offered the additional opportunity to engage with peers and participate in a free one-hour, interactive roundtable discussion, facilitated by the presenters, to address questions submitted by webinar participants and continue professional discussions regarding employee complaints.
