Schedule Released for CARES Expenditure Reporting

The California Department of Education (CDE) has released the full reporting schedule for recipients of Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act funds. The letter released by the CDE on September 23, 2020, expressed gratitude and acknowledged all local educational agencies (LEAs) that fulfilled the first reporting cycle, and also included the schedule for the next five reporting windows:

Reporting Period Reporting Window Open Final Day to Report
July 1, 2020–September 30, 2020 October 1, 2020 October 7, 2020
October 1, 2020–December 31, 2020 December 31, 2020 January 6, 2021
January 1, 2021–March 31, 2021 April 1, 2021 April 7, 2021
April 1, 2021–June 30, 2021 July 1, 2021 July 7, 2021
July 1, 2021–September 30, 2021 September 30, 2021 October 6, 2021

The first reporting cycle included only the Coronavirus Relief Funds (CRF), but subsequent reporting periods will include all CARES and Learning Loss Mitigation (LLM) funds, including:

  • Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) Fund—Resource Code 3210
  • LLM Governor’s Emergency Education Relief (GEER) Fund—Resource Code 3215
  • LLM CRF—Resource Code 3220
  • LLM General Fund—Resource Code 7420

Because the first reporting cycle excluded ESSER, GEER and General Fund dollars, LEAs are expected to report all expenditures through September 30, 2020, in those funding sources even if the expenditure was incurred in the 2019–20 fiscal year.

The platform, and password, used to report the first round of CRF will be used for each of the subsequent reporting periods. The platform can be found on the CDE website by clicking here. A full copy of the CDE letter can also be accessed here.
