Assistant Superintendent of Business Services
ABOUT THE POSITION
Under the direction of the Superintendent, the Assistant Superintendent of Business Operations serves as Berkeley Unified School District’s (District) chief business executive and strategic advisor on all fiscal, operational, and resource management matters. The position provides visionary leadership for the District’s business and operational services to ensure fiscal sustainability, operational excellence, equitable resource allocation, and effective stewardship of public funds in support of student achievement and the Board’s strategic priorities.
As a Senior Management position within the Classified Service and under the direction of the Superintendent or designee, this position plans, organizes, implements, supervises, and evaluates District business services functions, including, but not limited to, accounting, budget, fiscal services, food service, payroll, purchasing, risk management, technology, transportation, and warehouse services. Additional responsibilities include evaluating the primary management personnel in these areas; formulating and developing Business Division systems, policies, standards, and procedures in compliance with Board policies and federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations; and training, supervising and evaluating the performance of assigned personnel. ABOUT THE DISTRICT
The District is responsible for educating more than 9,400 individual students in 11 public elementary schools, 3 middle schools, 1 comprehensive high school, and an alternative high school. In addition, the district has three preschool facilities and an Adult School serving several thousand students each year. Berkeley taxpayers have recognized the value of public education and provide a significant amount of additional resources through the Berkeley Schools Excellence Program (BSEP), the Berkeley Educators Recruitment and Retention Act (BERRA) and the Facilities Safety and Maintenance Act (Measure H). BSEP allows Berkeley schools to maintain small class sizes and to support libraries, music, and funds for each school. BERRA provides funds to recruit and retain staff, and Measure H maintains school buildings and grounds.
Our General Fund Budget is $228.8 million including the resources provided by our local taxpayers. The District is fiscally solvent and meets the 3% reserve required by the state of California.
QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination equivalent to:
A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business administration is required; certified Public Accountant (CPA) licensure and/or master’s degree in lieu of bachelor’s degree is preferred
California Association of School Business Officials Chief Business Official certification/training is highly desired
Five years of varied and increasingly responsible accounting and business services experience to include three years in a district-level business supervisory capacity with two years’ experience in school district budgeting is required
SALARY
The salary range for this position is $225,000 to $250,000. In addition to this salary, a benefits package is offered, including 100% coverage for the employee and family for health at the Kaiser rate effective January 1, 2027.
